  3. The 1541 "Ultimate"

  5. (On this moment on a Xilinx developing
  6. board) The construction and future of the 1541 "Ultimate" At this time, some
  7. hard work is performed to replace the
  8. widespread 1541 disk drive.

  10. Our club member Gideon Zweijtzer has
  11. made an implementation of the 1541 disk
  12. drive in an FPGA, and demonstrated one
  13. of the first versions of this hardware
  14. emulation on Saturday December 16,
  15. 2006 in Maarsen. This prototype used
  16. a Xilinx development board. The
  17. prototype shows that it is possible to
  18. ?download? an image of a floppy disk
  19. from the PC to the 1541-emulator by
  20. means of Ethernet. This image is
  21. placed in a memory that the 1541-
  22. emulator has access to. The rotation of
  23. the disk and the stepper motor that
  24. moves the read/write head is mimicked
  25. accurately. The achieved compatibility
  26. is very high, because this
  27. implementation uses the original 1541
  28. ROMs. At this moment the emulator is
  29. perfection to the point that even
  30. difficult speed-loaders such as the one
  31. from the Final Cartridge III work well.

  33. Parallel to the implementation of the
  34. 1541 itself, work is being done on an
  35. interface to a SD-card, such that it
  36. should be possible to load .D64-files
  37. from there, rather than having to
  38. download them through Ethernet.
  39. These two functions together will
  40. appear soon on just one printed
  41. circuit-board; one that can be used as
  42. cartridge for the C-64. This cartridge
  43. will include the 1541-emulator, but
  44. will also implement another cartridge,
  45. such as the Final Cartridge III. With
  46. this cartridge it will be possible to
  47. select a floppy image and ?put it in
  48. the drive?, by means of a menu on the
  49. C-64 screen. For the purpose, the
  50. cartridge has a ?third button?. This
  51. button functions very similar to the
  52. freeze-function of other cartridges,
  53. but will be used to bring up a menu to
  54. select an image from the SD-card. When
  55. the user exists the menu, the Commodore
  56. will continue operation. To serve other
  57. Commodore users as well, other than
  58. C-64 users, the plan exists to have
  59. this cartridge operate as stand-alone
  60. unit as well. Since the on-screen menu
  61. will not be available in this case, the
  62. user needs another method to select the
  63. floppy image. There are several ideas
  64. to do this, but these ideas are not yet
  65. completely mature. The hardware is
  66. being developed such that new
  67. functionality can be added to the
  68. emulator system by simply putting
  69. some files on the SD-card. The first
  70. release will ?only? implement the
  71. cartridge and the 1541 in its purest
  72. form.
